Islamic Relief has launched an emergency appeal to get vital aid to vulnerable families as the crisis in the Central African Republic continues to deepen.
Fighting between government forces and armed groups has forced one million people to flee their homes in the Central African Republic (CAR). Hundreds of thousands are seeking safety in neighbouring countries, with those that remain facing a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
The violence has plunged the most vulnerable families into food insecurity. At present, one million people are living in the shadow of hunger. Families sheltering in the swelling camps and those trapped in enclaves in the south and south west of CAR urgently require food, water, sanitation and protection.
• One in five of the population have fled their homes
• One million people live in the shadow of hunger (food insecurity)
• Violence continues to worsen and the humanitarian situation is deteriorating further
Islamic Relief is working with War Child UK and its local partner Enfants Sans Frontiers (ESF) to support three ‘Child-Friendly Spaces’ in Bangui, CAR. Thousands of children use the project facilities, where they take part in informal education and psychosocial activities – giving them respite from the hostile environment and restoring some sense of normality to their lives.
We are also providing CAR refugees in nearby Chad with essential humanitarian assistance – including food, sleeping mats, hygiene items and raising health awareness to prevent the outbreak of disease in camps.
In addition, we are currently in CAR, engaging with other humanitarian organisations to develop a comprehensive humanitarian response. We are also looking to join inter-faith efforts to secure lasting solutions to the crisis.
You can support us in helping the people of CAR, whose lives have been torn apart by violence. With your help, we can respond to the immediate needs of families – both inside and outside the country – and help communities to build lasting solutions to the conflict.
