Yazidi people fleeing violence in Sinjar and Shangal have received vital aid through our emergency response to the increasingly complex conflict in Iraq.
The conflict in Iraq has so far forced an estimated two million people from their homes – making the country home to one of the world’s largest populations of displaced people.
Since the onset of the crisis, Islamic Relief has been working on the ground to deliver life-saving humanitarian relief. Our emergency programme includes assisting those caught up in the fighting in the northern governorate of Ninewa, where hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes.
Our teams in Ninewa have provided aid to families sheltering in IDP camps such as Al-Khaser, distributed foodpacks to Christian families and delivered life-saving relief for Yazidi people, many of whom were amongst those stranded on Sinjar mountain earlier this year.
Food and essential items for the most vulnerable
Around 250 Yazidi families who fled Sinjar town received food and essential items in an Islamic Relief distribution that ended in August. The distribution reached especially vulnerable families – mostly women and children living in government buildings or out in the open around Sinjar district.
The food parcels provided were designed to feed a family for about five days. They included essential staples such as bread, canned meat and vegetables, canned cheese as well as water. Each family also received two blankets, two mattresses, and two pillows each.
Islamic Relief is also distributing aid items to Yazidi families seeking shelter in Duhok, in Iraqi-Kurdistan.
When the distribution is complete, around 1,125 vulnerable families will have received food supplies, including canned meat, rice, lentils and bread as well as tea, dates and cooking oil.
The families – who fled their homes in Shangal – are also being given hygiene items such as soap, antiseptic, toothbrushes and diapers for babies.
Islamic Relief’s humanitarian aid has reached thousands of vulnerable people so far, but many more people across the country still need our help. With conflict raging in the western governorate of Anbar also, there is no end to the crisis yet in sight.
