As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, Islamic Relief continues our vital work to secure ‘balance for better’.
Standing up for gender justice throughout the year in our advocacy and programming, we are speaking out, raising awareness and training communities and faith-leaders to spread the word.
We are knocking down the barriers which stop women and girls from taking part in all aspects of life.
Here are just some of the ways in which we’re bringing about ‘balance for better’:
- Females make up 70 per cent of the world’s poor people. We’re lifting women and girls out of poverty by helping women forge lasting livelihoods and financial self-reliance.
- Our development projects give women access to the services and facilities they need – such as water close to home, maternal healthcare, and private places to bathe – to live safer, healthier lives.
- Everyone has a God-given right to dignity and protection from harm. Islamic Relief staff across the globe add their voices to calls to end gender based violence.
- The family of Siba, 14, fiercely oppose early marriage after our work raising community awareness of harmful cultural practices.
- In a world in which millions of girls are not in school, our education projects enable girls like Lukia, 12, to learn, equipping them to build brighter futures.
We’re also developing the world’s first Islamic Declaration, presenting Islamic faith principles of justice and balance to challenge harmful cultural practices and social conditions.
Next week, Islamic Relief events at the Commission for the Status of Women (CSW) will focus on the role of faith, faith based actors, communities and mobilization in empowering disabled women and girls and supporting them in exercising their rights.
